Gastric sleeve surgery is a procedure that is used to help individuals with obesity lose weight. It involves removing a large portion of the stomach, leaving a narrow, sleeve-shaped stomach behind. The procedure is usually performed laparoscopically, which means it is done through small incisions using specialized instruments, including a laparoscope (a thin tube with a camera). During the surgery, the stomach is reduced in size by removing about 80% of it. This results in the patient being able to eat less food and feel full more quickly, leading to weight loss. Gastric sleeve surgery is a proven and safe way for individuals with obesity to lose weight, and many people experience significant weight loss within the first year after the procedure.
